Written in Williams’ “…best style of mood, lyricism and tenderness” (New York Times), it is the story of a Sicilian immigrant's daughter, unhappily running a dry-goods store and tending to her dying husband in the South of the 1950’s, when she is reawakened by a young charismatic musician who drifts into town.
Orpheus Descending was originally produced on Broadway in 1957, and revived in 1989. Originally written as Battle of Angels in 1940, an early work in the Williams canon, Williams rewrote it five times, reshaping it as a modern retelling of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice.
